No athlete wants to be sidelined, but the truth is it is a part of the path we choose, it's hard not to demand so much from your body and not have it rebel or go on strike sometimes. You just hope it isn't often and that when it happens it doesn't cost you much time or come at a critical time.

Since the end of February I've missed five weeks, two weeks missed was for a bruised heel. I got back for a solid two weeks and got a bout of tendinitis, that was not major but could turn into something permanent if I didn't give it a chance to calm down. So I spent two weeks in the pool and another ten days coming back slowly. Tendons are slow to heal and if you let them get bad you'll be crying all season, if you do have one.

Tuesday was my first time over hurdles in just under a month, and it felt glorious! I haven't lost much in technique but need to get some race speed ASAP.

It was also my first day back doing long fast runs in spikes aka lactic acid and it hurt something terrible. I've chronicled the aftermath and a little surprise from CBC in the following video.... Take care xo

DQFS-France 2011

I'm in Lesquin, France. And I can't wait to get out of here. Meeting Pas De Calais the second meet of my five meet indoor tour was last night. So now that I've set up the present lets go back to one instance the night before the race...

There is this jolly old Frenchman that has adopted me as one of his favorites, it doesn't matter how many times he sees me in the hotel its always the same refrain "PARE-DEETAH!!!....". I've been coming to this meet since 2004 so I'm a well known face here. I always make it a point to stop and chat and speak my best Frenglish to the staff, so I guess I'm appreciated.

I adore him dearly, but after three days when I see him coming I make myself small and avoid eye contact. Doesn't work. "PARE-DEETAH!!....". Really Sean Paul, I mean I just saw you 10 minutes ago in the elevator and for the cinquante time today!

Anyhoo the night before the race I'm in the hallway having a conversation, and who do I see coming towards us. Right, Sean Paul. Zut Alors. I brace for what will be another I just can't. Why can't peace just be still moment.

Sean Paul goes in. "PARE--DEETAH!!....." he exclaims and states that he is the false starter gun man for the competition. Bravo! I insist, good for you. He wags a naughty finger my way and laughs, (in French) honh honh honh. Basically dude was teasing me: do not make me have to cock a glock....

Right.

To which everyone basically says oh no PARE-DETAH, she doesn't false start (FS). Exactly Sean Paul so take your bad mind self to the elevator. You won't be popping no caps in my tail feather. I was a bit annoyed that everyone had that talk out in the universe. Shush. We're in France people, why don't you lot make colour commentary on how flaky the croissants are...

History of Me and the FS-You see I haven't false started in a race since 2000, I was a freshman in college and got disqualified (DQ) at the Texas Relays. The funny thing is I didn't really false start, my teammate Crystal beside me did, but they mistakenly charged me. In 2007 at the World Championships in the semi final I was called for a false start, but again it wasn't me who did it, they mistook my lane (no true stories lol, I know I sound like a convict).

The old rule allowed one FS for the field before a DQ, the new rule states one FS is an instant DQ. I don't usually pay any attention to the rule, because let's just be honest you've seen my start right? Exactly.

So to make a long story short-ish. Why the hell did I false start out of the bloody final last night?!! You hear my tone, so it's perfectly clear how I feel. I was in lane four and the official announced who was charged: "Numero quatre". I literally counted on my fingers "un, deux, trois....my lane---quartre! GAASSP." The revelation was crushing. Why couldn't quatre be French for lane one or something. Chaaa

And guess who was at the side line? Yes. Sean Paul. He escorted me off the track as I did the walk of shame. I was waiting for him to "PARE-DEETAH!!" me one last time. But for the first time in life Sean Paul was tres tranquil. And I appreciated that. My boy was so hurt he didn't even have a smile on his face or something jolly to tell me. And after the race he took me over to the starters to watch the official result. Looks like I rocked back in the block during the set position and the pedal sensors went off, which is a false start even if I didn't move forward before the gun.

I saw the girls after the race and congratulated Kellie Wells on an awesome race. No one believed I was called and a few of us had a good chuckle about it. Because let's just be honest, I'm not known for my starting prowess.

I ended the night doing a self-punishment workout on the spot. All professional athletes know that one well and have called upon its venom a time or two in their careers. The impromptu session sparked by the utter vexation, regret of falling short when there is no excuse, and taking it out on the flesh seems to be the only retribution.

I'm flying to Dusseldorf today and leaving this race behind me. I race again on Friday, the plan there is to show some discipline.

**MEET RESULTS**

Millrose Monster 2011

I had a rough time getting to NYC because of the blizzards, but got here eventually and safely. I took the subway all by my lonesome late Thursday night to The Armory Indoor Track to get a dynamic warm up in. I was very nervous taking the subway and wondered the entire trip if indeed my tetanus shot was up to date. Yes the NYC subway is very gritty, makes you wanna lick the TTC by comparison.

I was 3rd in my season opener and ran 8.05, I was happy with what I got out of the whole experience. Obviously I wanted to win, but this was just one small step towards Daegu and I appreciated my efforts. My opener last year was 8.13 so already I feel like its a very positive first step, despite being rusty most of the way. Coach Randy wasn't impressed with me technically and it will be good to watch the video with him, and see what needs cleaning up.

I have a very ambitious European indoor schedule set up, I haven't raced this much indoors since 2007. I am looking forward to the fun of back to back races and setting up a fast rhythm.

My first stop is The Deutschland next Saturday (Love me some Germany)! I'll compete in Stuttgart at the Sparkassen Cup February 5. I've never raced here and have heard great things about the meet and the track from other athletes.

Ice Ice Baby

Ever have one of those days @ work where you feel like a rock star? Today was one of those days for me, except not a rock star just a really really fast stick jumper. Things were clicking and my body just did what I wanted, I didn't even have to beg or bribe it like I did last week!

Today was a good day.

After practice I drove to a gas station to buy some ice, high end work like that gets rewarded with 10 minutes of hypothermia in an ice tub. Outside the store I spent 5 minutes pulling, shoving and alas karate chopping the door of the freezer to try to get it open.

Nothing.

The stupid door was frozen solid and wouldn't budge. This man twice my size, with hands like bricks stood at the pay phone beside me smoking a cigarette watching the whole thing unfold. Amused.

Chivalry? Oh ya it's dead.

Desperate not to abandon my dream of a frigid soak, I knew there was only one thing left to do. The karate kick....except from a rolling start. Usually I save this move for brawls, but figured it was of good use here. I stepped back, ran 4 metres like I was in the starting blocks and stubbed my toe on contact. Owww. Very rusty. BUT!!--to our amazement (me and Mr. I don't aid damsels in distress) the door sprang open!

He was so happy, he told the person on the phone in an excited voice. I had to check him and look at him sideways, What are you all chim chim cheree about, lazy? After all if you were so invested why is my big toe throbbing right now and not yours? So mind yo bidniss puh...leazze.

I go to pay for the ice and the clerk asks me to clarify that I do indeed want to buy ice?...a 20lbs bag?! To which I respond: Yes I know it's a hundred below zero outside. Yes I realize the door of the freezer hasn't seen any action since Adam was a little boy. And yes I am crazy. Keep the change. Then I leave.

In redeeming fashion dude put out his smoke and helped me haul the ice out of the freezer.

Chivalry? Resuscitated...for now.

The "ME" in TEAM

I'm back from Phoenix and too bad you can't see me because I am glowing! I had a great time and I was really able to narrow my focus and prepare with a bit more urgency for the season ahead.

There is something about being around other elite people, not just athletes, but individuals that are the best at what they do. I really appreciated the environment I was in and have to give a shout out to the best medical team anywhere. Canada has world class clinicians, and I've been around the ~~block~~ world a few times, so trust me when I say that no one is better.

I saw the entire staff work around the clock to make sure as athletes our needs were met. I felt bad at times when I realized they hadn't eaten on schedule, if at all! Each one put our needs before their own. I am grateful that this is the team that will be heading into London 2012 with me. How lucky am I!

Last year I was asked to address students at The Canadian Chiropractic College, I had the floor for an hour and wasn't sure how best to fill that time. I don't use notes when I speak but give a lot of thought to what I want to say to any audience days in advance. I hate to sound rehearsed and speaking from my heart is the only way I know how to share a message. I'll share with you in this blog, what I told them.

You have to care about the person first. Period.

Their status, power, your praise or recognition, must have nothing to do with why or how you help somebody. You must genuinely care about them for who they are, not what they have or can bring to the table. I believe that should be at the moral core of every person.

As an athlete this is especially important since what we do is an emotional roller coaster. You have to trust the people around you. Doubt can't ever seep in when it comes to their motives and reliability, there is too much to stress about on this journey. The people you surround yourself with shouldn't be a source of concern.

Some of my most candid conversations or admissions have not been with my mother, sisters or BFF. But with someone on my team. Laying on a massage table at the end of a season and admitting that my spirit felt defeated….

Or getting that last hug before I depart to the final of a World Championship. Except this hug is tighter, the final reassurance that we had done the work, that extra squeeze just meant: Go prove it P...

You need to be able to face your team on any given Sunday and know that they will be there waiting. With no judgements, needing no explanations.

And because I believe in these people and they are my friends, I know no matter what happens on the track I can hold my head high and walk back to meet them and feel safe, loved, human.

I’m so glad that all these years later, I still know they love me for me. Medals, jumping sticks quickly and of course my angelic aura are just an added bonus or three! ;-)

Hopefully they took that message to heart and will be fabulous Chiropractors one day. However, I believe the heart of the message boils down to being a wonderful human being first.

Phoenix 2011

I'm in Phoenix for a warm weather training camp for 10 days. I'm so glad to be away from snow and ice and the gauntlet of treadmill training that was nearly the hallmark of my indoor training last year. I must admit I liked the challenge of the treadmill work, it really put some hair on your chest....check it out below.

This AC camp is fairly small and targeted, it's part of AC's London 2012 preparation, I am really feeling the energy around this team. The athletes, admin, medical, we're all very focused.

My season opener is right around the corner, and I'm never ever ready for it LOL. But I am looking forward to getting back in race mode. I'll compete January 28 at Millrose Games in NYC, then I'll head to Europe for a series of races in Germany and France.

Today I wrote a cheque for the water bill and wrote "2010", we'll see if it gets cashed. The point is time is flying and that's sorta scary. But I'm ready for it.

Out and Aboot

I am happy to say I was a quite the social butterfly over the winter break! If you know me you know I'm a homebody through and through. A TV, book, cup of tea, movie all from the couch or in my bed all excite me more than going out. I don't club or do the bar scene, I'm not a fan of partying. And to pay cover? GAASP! Why would I wanna do that?!

But I kicked it a few times with my girls and had a blast. Big ups to the FT crew for fun times!

Christmas '10
Christmas was a blast, I was a bit under the weather so I wasn't my crazy self. But there is enough crazy in my family to keep the madness afloat. I admire my family so much and I am always amazed at how much we all love and support each other.

NYE '10
I spent NYE the way I have spent it for nearly a decade, at home on the couch. I tend to fall asleep before midnight so I had to be nudged awake seven minutes before countdown. I was about to snap, and then was told to chill P it's new years eve. Oh. Right. (People know to only wake me for a legit fire or NYE).

I sipped some Riesling, watched the awkwardness that is Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin, gave the obligatory peck and took my tail back to snoresville at about 12:01.

Boooring? Perhaps. But that's how I want to spend every NYE if I can't be on a beach in Turks and Caicos!

2010 in Review
2010 was a good year to learn some lessons. I learned to trust my instincts and to do what is right even if it makes others uncomfortable. I had to make some tough choices about my training situation and felt torn at times. But in the end did what I knew was best for me, regardless of opinion.

Also, I have come to realize that my job influences my day to day emotions and feelings and this isn't always productive. I have come a long way in separating the athlete from the woman. I can have a performance I am unhappy with and still go home and be that chick that you want to kick it with. It's not perfected yet, but one day it could be.

In 2010 I took the trip of a lifetime when I went to Bamako, Mali. That was a highlight of my life and I am extra, but not exaggerating on this one!

Oh and in 2010 I turned 30! A major milestone, I'm slowly embracing this new found confidence and maturity. And the best part about being 30 is the look on people's faces when I tell them. I know right--I look tender and spry don't it!

Santa To Me

Thanks for my peeps who remind me to blog when it gets to the point that I sometimes forget. A lot of changes the last few weeks have taken much of my focus.

Change is good sometimes, right? Ya its what I am telling myself.

Training is going well, I can't believe I'll be racing in a months time. Where does the time go? It's my favorite time of the year and I am doing my best to enjoy it. But I do admit I had way more fun with Christmas when I was a kid, I could care less about giving, simply receiving was my cause.

When I was eight I really wanted high top sneakers, that is all I would ask for. When I was nine I remember wanting a jean skirt. I guess showing my legs was all I could dream of. I usually got what I wanted, and thankfully it was always something affordable.

My mom still has the very first gift I ever bought her with my own money (that she gave me). It was a figurine of a house I bought at a bargain store in 1987. I never bought her a card, but the bottom of it was lined with green felt and in black marker I wrote the date, Merry Christmas and that I loved her. Anytime I see it (which isn't often), to hold it makes me remember what life was like for us back then, and that makes me tearful and grateful.

It didn't matter how many things were under the tree, or if we had a tree or anything to put under it. I knew from an early age Santa wasn't real. Or at least he wasn't an old man with a big gut and long beard. It was a woman I watched work night and day who never showed any signs of giving up. She'd wake me up when it was still dark outside, but let me sleep again on her lap when it was time to comb my hair. We'd walk in dark silence for half an hour to my sitters, and everytime she'd kiss me, tell me to behave and I'd watch her leave. She'd take the bus for hours even in the freezing cold, or pouring rain to work. Taking great care of other people's children, to make sure she could provide and take great care of her own.

I knew how hard it was for her to leave me every time and even though I was extremely young we were so well connected that I could feel her burden. I saw her cry many times and remember telling her it was "OK", and knowing that if I at least behaved, as she asked me to, I would be doing the only thing I could to help her.

So when I think of Christmas or this time of year I don't think of Santa, or Christmas trees. I think of the wonderful mother God gave me and how this time of year reminds me of how blessed I am to have her. And hope I can bless my own children with her resillence, devotion and gift of sacrifice. So when I think of Christmas I think of love and all the wonderful memories I have with her but mostly because of her. And how many of the most poignant ones come to mind around this time of year or just if I'm walking after dark in bitter cold.

Re-Discovering Perdita

Just so it's clear there is still no cable or TV action in my life.

How's it going you ask? Pretty good actually, though I spend a lot more time online. Family Feud on Facebook standup!

I've now settled into a routine and Coach Randy and I are finding our way as coach and pupil. We've been friends for years and I have to say it's been a very easy transition. I appreciate his leadership when we are on the track, and how attentive he is to all the athletes under his watch.

Now anyone who has ever coached me will say a few things about the athlete that I am:

1) I ask a lot of questions--all the time--everyday--even if I probably know the answer.

I'm sure it's annoying, tedious, redundant--the works! But I've always been a very curious pupil. I want to know the purpose of why we do what we do, and why another way is simply not the answer today.

Luckily I've never had a coach with an ego and they have all indulged me. Every single time. But I have to say my new coach must feel like he is having a pop quiz every day. I'm glad he knows me (and has seen this in action with my former coach good old Gdub) and he patiently explains away. That I believe is a sign of a good teacher, and I've been blessed to know a few.

2). I find GREAT joy and pleasure in the teeniest victory. I don't care what it is, or how small the feat seems to be. If I did something that was asked of me, (regardless if all the other parts were crap!) I'll celebrate what I did do right, to the fullest extent of the law my space.

So anytime Coach Randy graces me with any kind of praise or positive reinforcement I dance like it's the second coming. Mainly because I love progress--in ANY form. (Yes. I literally break out in dance or do a Ryu Street Fighter "All You Can!" upper cut in the air). I know he has seen this before when he wasn't my personal coach, but he still looks at me crazy and says: "Hold on...hold on, you haven't arrived yet!" as he ponders my foolery. To which I say: "But--I'm pulling up in my new whip coach---beep beep". (This action must be mimed out).

Another thing I appreciate in my new environment is it is acknowledged that I do somethings very well. Certain technical elements I do are world class and I could very well be the prototype for them. (OK you got me. No one has EVER said that last part to me, but it's my blog and that's how I'm gonna frame it, OK. So please be a good teacher reader and indulge me). ;0)

Anyways as a world class athlete there will always be a level that I can reach with basic effort. But it's time for me to expect precision in my reps and have more of a sense of urgency with the time I have left in my career. If I have become subconsciously complacent, when I step into this mans practice such a trance is not welcome. It not an environment where perfection is expected, so much as an athletes passionate belief and respect for their own ability.

I'm learning to challenge myself and while I'm good, I don't just want to be good enough. And that is a decision that the pupil makes (all over again) not the coach.

Little P On The Prairie?

So I'm toying with an idea, but I'm not sure how far I'll take it. It's already been over 24 hours and I'm thinking I could totally do this...well maybe. I know you're wondering what I'm talking about, I'm getting to that, but allow me to set it up.

Yesterday I moved into my new place. Everything I own is in this piece, I mean there are boxes piled to the popcorn heavens. Normally my first order of business would be to declutter my space. But apparently not this time.

Having done this a year ago, my labour intensive move from Champaign to Atlanta is still too fresh for me to want to deconstruct cardboard boxes all day. Yawn. My crock pot and crochet will just have to wait until later to be unearthed.

However my priorities in a new place is always to get the kitchen and the food game up and running. Gotta have my snacks and nobody loves salmonella.

Next is usually getting the entertainment situation sorted out: internet, cable with TiVo, HD, the works.

Side Note: Did you know my fav Judge Judy comes on three times a day here? From 4-530pm I watch her destroy peoples self efficacy. Apart from the end of practice this is usually the highlight of my day.

Now, since I was previously staying at the besties house, her and her husband paid ALL utilities (even their own mortgage). It was three weeks of bill free bliss for moi. I didn't even have to supply my own toothpaste! For a person who doesn't like to spend money and has been told I am the definition of parsimony by both my accountant and a travel agent (who don't know each other, by the way) this was fueling the frugal fire within.

Now that I am suddenly responsible for my own heat, cable---and toothpaste.... chaaa....I kinda miss not having to worry about such things. Having only been on my own one day, my big idea is this: I will not order any cable, instead I'll go Little House on the Prairie sorta like.

Side note: I will splurge on some Colgate Total but that's as far as I'm taking it. Though I reserve the right to help myself to the besties batch from time to time. I don't need a new tube, I steal accept partials.

What do you think? I brought this up to a few close friends and I'm greeted with the same dry skepticism: "Yeah right", then they instantly move on to the next topic. They give no credence to my announcement/proposal.

But I'm going with my gut here. I think I can do this, so far I want to do this. It's not really about saving $70 a month, its more about the time that will be free to work on some projects I've been putting off for a while. It's night number two and so far so good. My aim is to take it month by month.

Pardon my disappearing act, it is week 4 of training and I am beat! Getting into shape has got to be the most uncomfortable part of my job. Oh wait. I forgot something. Riiight.... how about peeing in a cup in front of a perfect stranger. TMI? Me too. Imagine being there.

Anyhoo normally I have a legion of trackstars going through the initiation with me (Ok at least one other). But as it stands this is now a one woman show. Strangely I don't mind this.

It has forced me to dig deeper and really question why I go to work every day. Is it to be seen? To socialize? Compare abdominal definition? Heck no. I lose that one every season.

The point is I have a much clearer sense that this is about me and no one else, and that I really want this. Yes, it would be nice to have someone to fall out with in drama queen fashion after being baptized by lactic fire. Now, I can no longer find comfort in our intertwined agony.

The truth of the matter is, each person is responsible for making their own dream come true. And I aim to stay faithful to mine regardless of who is there to bare witness.

The walls where I train read: “Champions are made on a thousand invisible mornings”. That mantra has buoyed my courage everyday.

Back At One

Whats good Peeps? Hopefully everything!

I've been basking in the after glow that was my trip to Mali. Did you know that I left the Western Hemisphere? No.

Ouch.

Well hopefully some of you read the blog on the regular and knew that I was having the trip of a lifetime...And it was all going good until I was shipped back to reality via an Air France flight, some time last week. How does a Bella feel about this? Well, in the spirit of Hallows' Eve: BOOO!

So here I am. Back to life as I know it. In track speak, I'm back at one. The first week of training and all you and I need to care about at this junction is that I have survived.

A lot of changes happened in the last two months. I am no longer training in Atlanta, but have carved out a nice oasis for myself in the sexy town that is East Lansing, Michigan @ Michigan State University.

SIKE.

I have been here four days and have yet to find the sexy. Not sure it's ever been here in fact. But I digress. I'm here training with Randy Gillon, I'm happy to be welcomed here and excited to get back to the structure and standards needed to be the best.

Be sure to check back my little corner of the interweb, I'll be able to share more once I settle into a routine.

Oh and in case there was ever any doubt--Don't! I will be "I-L-L"ing all up in this piece, if only under my breath.

Mali: Day 4 In Pictures

Day four in Bamako was a very productive one. Right To Play held a conference at the National Sports University on a range of topics from: sport and education to sport for development. There was some media coverage and great dialogue. As ambassadors we all addressed the room with our personal stories and messages.

In the afternoon we got to be big kids! Right To Play was celebrating its 10th anniversary and used an inclusive play day to celebrate. Happy Anniversary! 200 kids from eight Bamako community centres were unleashed and we had a ball.

There were also students from Jigiya Kanlaso school, which is a school for children with special needs. I learned an important aspect of Right To Play is having their coaches adapt and modify games so all children can participate.

On day three we drove 1.5 hours to reach the village of Keleya where we met with Right To Play staff, the mayor and his advisors. We visited their school, hospital and walked around the village.

We drove another hour and arrived in Manfilani, where we met the traditional leaders, watched a frisbee match and danced and had fun.

Mali Day 3: In Words

Thursday October 14, 2010 will be one of those days I never forget. Just like Paris. And yes just like Athens. But yesterday being memorable had nothing to do with competitive fire. Its flame rising or crudely extinguished.

This wasn't in a stadium in some glamorous or legendary city. No, this is a place less known. The only road to it is long and unpaved, marked by stalks of corn, precarious bridges and silence. This place was one of the most warm and inviting places I have ever been to. And I felt like I could have stayed in its midst forever.

The village is called Manfilani and when our jeeps approached this wonderful place, its youngest inhabitants had lined the road ready to meet us. As we got out of the cars they cheered, giggled and ran towards us, their anticipation finally over.

Mine was too.

I saw hundreds of smiling, perfect faces. Faces that looked just like mine. It was like I had been on a long trip and just came home. Not one person had forgot me, they were just happy I was back. I don't know how else to describe it.

We sat as honored guests as the entire village of 900 sat around. We were greeted with a performance. I didn't know the tradition or the symbolism behind it, but I know how it made me feel. Overwhelmed, happy, blessed. A. Part. of. them.

I felt like this is where I was suppose to be, and gosh I wish I had come back sooner. I could have cried for a long time in that moment. And if I was with someone I knew very well I probably would have.

Instead I let a few warm tears escape my hands and hit the ground beneath me. Hoping that when they touched the earth this would send a memo to God, the universe and Manfilani that I was grateful.

On day two in Bamako, Mali we joined an orientation session for new Right To Play coaches in the "Live Safe Play Safe" (LSPS) category. Every one of them are already active P.E teachers or sport coaches in their communities.

We were asked to introduced ourselves and our sports, the room became abuzz once I explained who I was and what I do. Turned out many of the coaches recognized me and said they had watched me race countless times. After my intro they were saying: "Claquement de mains pour le champion du monde!": Clap your hands for The World Champion! I was all smiles!

We broke for lunch after our thorough session. I sat with one of my new besties, Kadiatou Dissa. Kadiatou gave me my new Malian name: "Fanta". Don't you Love it?!

Girl Lady Power

In the afternoon we went to Banconi Community centre. They work with the most vulnerable children in their area. The centre is completely run by female volunteers. The centres space is small and there are always many children present, yet the ladies never turn a child away.

But they also don't play any "games" when it comes to discipline. One look sent an unruly child right back into order. It reminded me of my own St. Lucian household. It was the warning look before the wooden spoon or useless (until then) table top artifact met your tailbone.

Laughing At Fanta

I ventured outside the walls while my travel mates were still inside the centre. On the street I befriended a group of young girls grinding seeds on the street. I talked to them and they kept laughing at me the entire time. I think my French was that terrible, maybe. lol

I asked them if I could take a turn with their chore and they obliged. They giggled as I took the pounding stick and jack hammered it into the pot filled with seed. Clearly I was a mess! After 15 minutes of me hanging around them I think they got used to me and when I had to leave they all gave me high fives.

Mali: Day 1

I made it to Mali safe and sound, Praise God! I must admit the trip was long but my excitement to come to this new land tempered any travel fatigue and jet cabin fever I experienced. It was great to meet my travelmates and finally get this party started!

We hit the ground running at 8:30am after a delicious breakfast buffet at our hotel. Our first stop was a local kindergarten that has 400 students enrolled!

I had the most fun here and got to see them do all the Right To Play exercises led by their teachers. We joined in at times and it was great to be a kid again! I bought some of my favorite candy from home to share with them and I was glad the director allowed this.

Our next stop was at the offices of Right To Play Mali, where we met with the staff and educators. There was hours of great discussion on R2P in Mali, their successes (many!) and challenges. Everyone in that room believes in what they are doing and are passionate about their younger generations.

We attended Mamadou Diarra school in the afternoon and got to see and join in Right To Play's "Peer Educator" series. This is where a fellow student, who shows commitment and leadership skills educates his and her peers on various issues impacting them. For example HIV/Aids, Malaria, etc. It is all in the form of game and play, it's the most interactive form of teaching and learning I have ever really seen.

One game was the group joined hands in a circle, one person was the HIV virus lurking outside this circle. When the virus tried to break into the circle at different points, it was everyones job to try to stop this from happening.

Great Day Ends With Great Night

The night ended in dance, song and great food at Hotel Mande with all R2P-Mali staff. This was an awesome way to end the night, with a live local band that wasn't short on energy and charisma. I did so much traditional dancing my feet hurt lol. But you know I had to drop it low a few times just to keep it WESST SIDE (as in hemisphere)! ;-)

Sincerely I am in awe, proud and humbled by everyone I met today. This experience is so important to me and not a moment of its richness will I forget or take for granted.

Negative. I love my all-over the-placeness. But really I've been stuck looking up results and watching my friends competing in the Commonwealth Games. Go Team Canada!!

Mali Baby!

Sunday night I leave for Mali and words can't describe my excitement. I can't wait for this adventure of a lifetime! I have had to put trips of this nature off in the past, and there was no way I was going to pass it up again. I've been a Right To Play Ambassador for over three years and this trip is well overdue. Thanks R2P!!

In September I spoke to this awesome group of 30+ University and High School students from across Canada. All championing R2Ps cause on their respective campuses

It was a hard call especially with the start of fall training. But the next non-stop cycle of: Worlds '11, Olympics '12, Worlds '13 is going to demand a lot from me. And this is the perfect time to do this. I can be a track star and live my life too. Before I turned 30 I thought I could really only have one and not the other.

Sooo About Fall Training....
To those of you worried about my fall prep, worry not. I've started some pre-conditioning for the past three weeks. I also plan to work out as best I can in Mali (Plus the way I see it nothing I do is gonna quell the agony that are 300s. This is just fact.)

Mamas Speech: 1 Millionth Edition
As customary I talked to my mom, and she went on her usual speech the night before I embark on a big trip. The main points being:

1) *"Don't go in anyone's house you don't know..." Note: This is SO old school West Indian it's not even funny. I still remember stepping (just one) foot on Susie's porch in grade two. Immediately regretting it. Turning around and running home--and still paying for it.

*This rule is still active into adulthood and old age.

2) Don't drink anything from anyone unless you open it yourself! (My mom the WADA/CCES officer. Ha!)

Anyhoo that is all for now. I gotta work out in the morning and head to Bikram yoga. I will update as best I can with pics, video and telepathy!

I'm finding all kinds of ways to spend the last fleeting moments of my off season. It is going entirely to fast. This must be how parents feel about their children's childhoods whirling by. Maybe?

I had a meeting yesterday morning in Pickering and was finished early so stopped by "The office" to see my mom. If Cath is not at her government job, her children know exactly where to find her.

Like always she was in her usual spot at the local bingo parlour, ready to dab the afternoon away. I was pleasantly surprised to see my older sister in tow. Bov hates bingo!

What are you doing here?!

But I knew the answer to that. Over the decades we Felicien offspring know it's one of the best places to get mama all to ourself. Grant it, you gotta share her with a legion of dabbers, Beanie Babies and Troll Dolls, but they don't say much.

We were all exited to see each other and my mom urged me to stay. Try your luck Perdeet, you never know...

More than anything I just wanted to be with them, plus she seemed to sense some luck was in the air. Perhaps one of those trolls having a bad hair day decade told her something.

So I stayed. I have to say I haven't played bingo in ages, I was a hot mess, dabbing the wrong boxes and totally behind the call. My sister had to trade cards with me to help me catch up.

But when you're a winner, nothing will hold you back. Not even shear incompetence. I won the $1000 jackpot right out of the gate! Nothing can explain the rush and adrenaline I felt when I shouted "BIIING-GOOOOOO". And did the happy dance I do when I win something. I was on a high.

I didn't have to wait long to chase that first high. Within a few more games I won $500 in the consolation game. I was on fire.

My mom you shoulda seen her. The epitome of proud.

If it wasn't for my sister bringing me back to earth, I woulda been looking for a podium to climb onto or a jumbotron to stare at. But I kept it humble and just did my "Im rich beech" jig in my chair. (The old people were feeling this).

I won one more time and so did my mom when we returned for the evening session. I told the BFF we won nearly $2000 in three hours at Bingo and she said be 'careful, since I carry the gene'. LOL.

I sure do. I might have to quit my day job and make bingo a professional habit.

A Victory Report: Slow Twitch Edition

Yesterday I experienced something I have never felt before. I'm sure you've all heard of runner's high, some of you may have even experienced it.

I haven't.

But last night I am sure I felt its inferior and much slower cousin: Sprinter Runners High.

Yes, I went where few of my kind have ever gone before. I ran distance and I loved it!.

I hung out at the Nike Toronto Runners Lounge for Girl's Night Only. Last year I ran a 3k in 28:00. And in my second annual appearance my goal was to run that same distance but to set a new personal record.

It was a great intimate group of focused women, ready to conquer the night.

I took off with the pack down Avenue Road and by the third set of lights they were mere dots in the foreground. Ah hell, there goes my drafting strategy. No matter. I stuck to my pace: Slowest.

Soon I let my body settle into a comfortable rhythm and I started to open up to my environment. I realized the neat thing about running or training on city streets is that people get to see you. There is something very African Lion Safari about it, no?

See when I am training over the hurdles there is rarely an audience, certainly there are no oldies in a beat down SUV to impress. Honk Honk. I was beaming!.

But apparently my sprinter thighs weren't clearing the crosswalk fast enough. Oh. Suddenly I regretted making eye contact. Soooorie.

I rounded the corner home and felt euphoric that I wasn't bonking yet or even thinking of quitting. I did many times last year. I had to represent for stick jumpers everywhere. I couldn't stop, event pride was on the line. I started to think WWPRD. What would Paula Radcliffe do?.

She would kick, P!. She would sprint hard the last few metres and overtake everyone in her path. She would show mercy to no one!. So this is what you must do too. I took off. Within a few meters I passed a woman pushing a stroller. You're done. A man on a cell phone talking about nonsense. I swallowed his slow moving self in one stride. A dog walking his owner. Move pooch get out the way.

I was on fire. Cue Chariot's of fire music....

My final time was 23:52 minutes! Victory. And I found out that I didn't run what I thought was a 3k, my thunder thighs ran a whopping 4.1k. Who knew I could do it. Go me.

So why did I extend "Phat" week a whole extra week?!. Madness. I'm gonna pay for it.

My plan was a week of out of controlness, then a transition week back to properish eating habits. And on the start of the third week (today. GASP!) I'd start eating like I had some sense.

Negative.

But I'm gonna get back to the plan and it starts with hot yoga and some core later this afternoon. How do I feel about this?. Yawn.

But I gotta prime my body and can't lose 100% of my fitness. I'm nowhere near ready for serious training and need the mental rest for another two to four weeks. I never start training until I'm good and ready to face the rigors and demands of fall training. Which demands so much more because of the volume. I'll know I'm ready when I start to feel bored and miss the track, which is nowhere in sight.

Sweeet.

I'll also get back to treatments this week, chiropractic and massage. All this laid up on the couch can't be be good for the spine.

Here's one of my fav core exercises I'll be doing today. Give it a try if you can do it safely and are well conditioned.

In case you are wondering what has happened to me, not to worry I am still with you. I was just in a big black vortex called my off season. And I came to check up on ya for a hot minute before I go back to what I was doing...

Any guesses?!. It's not that hard.

Yup, the foodie in me has been sampling every calorie laden thing out there. I know I talk about food A LOT on this blog, but it's just in me to be!.

I got back from my five weeks abroad on Monday night and my mom and her hubby picked me up. It was a long trip and all I wanted was some home cooking when we got home. And Cathy did not disappoint, check it out...

I was giddy and the fat girl inside me went iiin!! Thank you mama! Stew chicken and rice--St. Lucia stand up!.

I have to say my off season is going to get a lot busier in the next few weeks. The most exciting part will be my trip to Mali in West Africa for a week with Right To Play. Words can't describe how crunk I am about this trip. I have been an Athlete Ambassador for a few years and this will be my first field visit and it is so over due, and to boot I have never been to Africa!.

I'll update again soon. I normally go buck (where food is concerned) for the whole off season, this year I've decided to go no holds barred but only for one week. Monday night is the last day... :(

Continental Cup Race

I was 3rd in 12.68 today in Split, I am glad to finish on the podium and be healthy!.

I have to give myself some credit for my race focus today. It was one of my best race preps all season, I came to the track all business. You couldn't tell me nothing. I haven't found that mental tunnel vision as much as I'd like this year.

I can't say this race was my best executed though. I had a horrendous reaction to the gun and had no acceleration until hurdle three. The second half was gang busters and I made a nice move to challenge Lolo and Sally at the line, but I had already given up too much ground.

And being in lane two I had no idea how the race was unfolding on the other side of the track. I am still unsure if not being able to see them was good or bad.

I am not a sore loser but I must say today's race left me a bit raw. I just feel there is a huge piece of my race that was missing this season. And today in Split was a great way to end the season by finally putting 10 solid clearances together. I didn't again.

Not being able to get the front end to match the back end drives the perfectionist virgo in me crassey!!. Why am I leaving myself so much work to do?! Ugh.

In any case just so you know, I'm glad to have some fire in my belly going into my off season. Not winning when I know I am capable won't destroy the belief I have in my ability. Confidence still lives here. That being said, I am tired of losing. 2011 bring yoself--Let's Go!.

Today is the first day of the Continental Cup, I don't race until tomorrow so I get to be a spectator today. I'm a huge track fan so I'll just kick my feet up and cheer on Team Americas.

I had my final practice of the 2010 season yesterday (I know!) and it went very well. I did some starts over a few hurdles using the official starters, so I is ready to go!.

Thirty is a 10

So Im still on the grind and trying to celebrate my Birthday week. Some fellow track starts got wind it was my P day on Sunday and vow to do it up with me Sunday night aftert World Cup. We’ll see. I have to admit 30 is not as ‘woe is P’ as I played it out to be in my mind.

I’m days deep into this third decade of life and I'm not experiencing many of the unchartered things I imagined at this precise age. I mean my joints aren’t squeaky, I can hear just fine and there is still no canary yellow on the ring finger.

All good.

I am settling nicely into this age and it doesn’t hurt that a lot of thirty somethings (+ some) have come to ease my uneasiness. To quote the legion of flourishing thirty somethings I know…

Zagreb 2010

The race tonight in Zagreb came down to a lean, it was Lolo who got there first by a hundredth. It was cold out there tonight and the results across the board weren't outstanding.

I was glad to end the night healthy and was happy with such a competitive race. I stayed composed and engaged the whole race, which sets me up nicely for Sunday's Continental Cup.

My super dude Dr. Kelsick will be in Split and our dynamic duo can get the job done, I'm sure of it.

One more to go....and it's sorta a big deal!.

Zagreb Meeting IAAF World Challenge September 1, 2010 100mh

So the end of my 2010 season is just around the corner as I race tonight in Zagreb, Croatia and on Sunday in Split, Croatia (then home to Pickering on Monday!...but first things first). Lolo Jones and I will represent The Americas at the World Cup in Split, this is my first time qualifying for this team and I hear it's a championship with a much lighter atmosphere.

I tend to get antsy around this time of the season. The training is very simple and the days seem longer. It has been a long ten months of training and racing and at this stage it is easy for me to look ahead to all the things I will do during the off season. The free time to hang with my favorite people, guilt free eating, and the fun initiatives I get to continue with my sponsors and partners.

So it's with great effort on my part and encouragement from others that I am not getting ahead of myself with two to go. My aim is to finish my season on a high note and know anything is possible. I would love a personal best, but based on the season I will be very happy to better my season's best time.

So no holding back now or going through the motions, my intensity tonight and in Split have got to be like they were at seasons start. These two races will help build momentum for my 2011 season and the big one being the Worlds in South Korea.

And you're saying No duh. But I have been repeating this to myself and whoever happens to be near me all day. The policeman at customs. The hotel receptionist. The woman showing her young son the airplanes at the airport.

You'd be minding your own business and suddenly I'd bust you in the ear with the information. Expecting you to comp my snacks from the mini bar or drop the hand of your small child and come see about me. Well Happy Birthday stranger, whoever you are!.

Nope. For the most part people took this information dryly. Some even looked at me all crazy.

What?...today is P-day.

Crickets.

But it didn't matter. I kept repeating my Dita Day mantra to myself: Today is your birthday. You are thirty!.

And you know what, after ten hours of saying this it actually feels like my birthday. Even if I spent it flying to Croatia and no one around knew how special the day was.

Such is the fate of a trackster born in August. I love my life and feel grateful to God I get to see another anywhere on our beautiful planet.

Well hellooo!

There is so much to talk about on this beautiful day, a bella hardly knows where to start. Ever have a morning where your happy feelings wake you up?. It's a beautiful and totatlly inconvenient occurance, because I love REM that much (who are we kidding?). Anyhoo, I really hope you have.

Ok the first thing my subconscious was buzzing about was last nights race. Third place in 12.68. Nothing spectacular, we know my standards. But something happened in the race I haven’t felt one single time all year. For the first time it felt like I was going to bite the dust!!. AKA scrape the skin off my chin post hurdle five.

I didn’t. This is a good thing.

But basically it’s a sensation that a hurdler lives for. There is only so much room between each hurdle, so when a hurdler breaks into a faster rhythm it often feels like the hurdle comes up before she is ready for it.

Your eyes see it coming but with the increased speed there is only so much time for your body to react to the impending barrier. You pray your training and tenacity have prepared you to make it in time, even though it feels like you won’t.

All skilled hurdlers live in this realm. And being able to embrace this sensation, expect it, create it; well it's what the good ones do best. But it’s hard to get there, though when you do, you can thrive there for a while.

Side note: If you don’t hurdle I can only explain one way for you to get this sensation. Go to the top of the steepest hill in your neighbourhood and sprint down it as fast as u can. DO NOT stop until it bottoms out. A few things to remember: you are not allowed to coast or slow down for comfort. In fact as fast as you are going, you have to force yourself to accelerate and go even faster.

*Please somebody do this and let me know how it goes. JK please don’t.!*

So anyhoo back to me--I felt this!. Now it didn’t last that long, but I felt this!! Ok I just said that. But can you sense my excitement?!!.

I then went to hit another gear, because you NEVER get comfortable with the one you’re in. (Stick jumping 101-check the credits, yo). Well instead of reacting like the 2011 Porsche 911 we all I know I am inside. I was more akin to my mom’s first car a 1989 ford escort, which the whole family called “Putt-Putt”.

Yeaah. Not my smoothest transition.

I got a bit sloppy but rallied to get my race back on track, without hitting the deck. I haven’t felt my top gear all season and I wasn’t sure it would rear is beautiful ferocious head with two races to go. It has. It was just a quickie resurfacing, but it’s there. And that’s all this stick jumper needed to know.

Big up to the last woman standing, Priscilla for clinching the overall Diamond League title.

What it do!
I'm racing tonight in the Diamond League final in Brussels. But I'm just checking in for a hot second before I get my race face on.

The week went by slowly I have to admit, and that's always good because it means I'm excited to race!. I was happy with my workout sessions this week and plan to compete just as hard as I did in Berlin.

The women's hurdles continue to be one of the most exciting races on the circuit this season, and today's race is late on the schedule tonight. Which is always a sign of respect and great anticipation. Hope you can catch it.

Hi Again!

I haven't posted in a few days, there wasn't anything really going on. A tinge of homesickness (can you tell from my last post), but that left in a day or so.

I used the time training solo in Kamen to really reflect on what I want out of the rest of my season. It was wonderful to have one of my best friends in the world (who happens to be one of the best chiropracters in the world too!) join me in Kamen and Berlin this past week.

I needed reinforcements after London and as always Dr. Wilbour Kelsick left his busy practice in B.C to help me out. I was happy with my second place finish in Berlin today. It was a huge step up from my seventh place, 12.96 in London. And a whole .25 seconds faster in 12.71.

I am grateful for all my performances, though the competitor in me is really not feeling all this "12.7x" business. But Berlin was progress because in 17 races outdoors this year, today was my second fastest.

It was all about effort and fueling my competitive juices after London. My bestie was ALL over my tail this week on email about bringing the stank nasty and finishing my season with gusto.

To quote her email this morning: "At this point, its more about the attitude and effort than the result, so let's see some fire and fight..."

Which is much more pleasant than an email I got from her a few days ago saying she really wanted to "shake me...". lol

I was in the same lane as I was in last year for the World Championship Final. Lane three. I used the memory of finishing that race in 15.53 seconds as inspiration to do better today. I was healthy and able and after all it was a new day. I'll take a 'do over', even if it's 12 months later. :)

I've got a few more races to go and I'm working hard and enjoying myself and as always expecting a break through. Your attitude I am learning is a very powerful tool.

When The Rain Hits My Window

It's pouring rain in Kamen, Germany today not the kind of weather that inspires happiness I must say. I watched the Canadian men's 400 relay leave this morning for Zurich. As well as my homie Nicole Forrester leave for Cologne.

Then it dawned on me as I walked back to my apartment dripping wet, that I was now at this place alone and how lonely is that. Suddenly I wanted my sisters to cackle with. And to hear my mom's voice with her familiar accent; the way it feels like home, no matter where in the world I am when I hear it.

My baby sister "Mini" sent me this song after my race in London and its been on replay ever since. I really love and miss them.

I can't stand the rain.

Dusseldorking

Just some history on the video you are about to watch. Nicole and I had a 4 am shuttle to London Heathrow, to catch our 7am flight to Dusseldorf, Germany. It didn't make sense to get four hours of sleep so we both did our respective things, which didn't include going to bed.

Meaning we had been up a whole day, which made for a crazy morning of travel. That included Nicole going toe to toe with a women in the customs queue. Since she wouldn't "commit to a line", but instead straddled both. Nicole won!. And I stood at the very end of the line laughing hysterically the whole show down.

We spent 45 minutes after landing in the Dusseldorf Duty Free shop spray jacking and sampling expensive lip sticks, with Jorgen the clerk.

We took so long playing Jezebel that by the time we made it to baggage claim our flight had been cleared from the screen and our luggage was no where in sight. After wandering aimlessly from carousel to carousel we felt completely lost and out of sort...until we saw our German knight in shining ~~armour~~ cart...

P's Guide: How To Smell Like a Million Euros

Duty+Airport=Free!

I travel a lot and I'm in a different country every few days, obviously this means a lot of time in airpots. In the last few seasons on the tour I have developed a certain compulsion that was breed from 'gate wait' boredom and my frugalistic disposition.

It very much revolves around the word "Duty" but only when specifically followed by the word "Free". I mean who doesn't like free stuff?!. I go Gaga over it. All kinds of Alejandro.

Hungry Or Not Here I Come...

I was that kid who would abandon moms shopping cart whenever we hit up Knob Hill Farms, our local grocery store. As soon as we hit those doors I was on the "free" sample prowl. It just wasn't safe for a bite sized morsel.

Imagine me all of six years old telling my mama: "You got this?, ok good. Ima do me, see you at check out...and do not forget my fruit roll ups.". I would then line up at every sample stand thrice, only to meet up with her later at the cash register with a gut full of bran flakes, oscar meyer weiners and a coupon for watching the streak free Windex demo. (That stuff was the truth).

Now not everything in the duty free shop is "free" and that is ok. We only want the free stuff. Which lucky for us is usually the sample bottles of expensive designer perfume. Dior, Chanel, Chloe, CK. The list is endless. So I suggest knowing what you want in advance and not deviating from this plan!.

I find it best to pseudo browse and act like you want to buy something. But all the while you use this time to scope out the exact coordinates of Eternity or Angel by Thierry Mugler.

Once you have locked in the coordinates proceed directly to the bottle. Slowly. We don't want anyone to sense the giddy inside us or draw attention to our spray jacking skills.

Look around too see who is watching (if there are too many eyes bend down behind something or someone...as I do). When the coast is clear bathe your person in choice fragrance, pump that spray till your index finger cramps. Pumps must be quick and ninja like.

Remember to layer, as this will make the freeness go further. If the situation allows go for broke and spray the mass of things in your carry on baggage. Computer bag optional.

Calmly return the bottle to its place and walk away. Quickly. Make eye contact with no one. If you hear: "Excuse me Madame/Sir..." spewed in your direction, sprint immediately towards your gate.

Congrats you now smell like a million euros and you didn't even spend a dime!. It's genius. No need to thank me.

Ok you got me. I'm human, incase you haven't noticed--but you probably have. * Tee hee.

I damn near closed the gates in London with my 7th place showing in my slowest time of the year, 12.96.

I won't agonize over it, but rather focus on the next competition in a week in Berlin. I've called in reinforcements so my chiro extraordinaire will be down to help me out. I'm so happy to have company from home, especially since Dr. Kelsick is one of my best friends and also acts as a sports shrink at times. Clearly he will be doing double duty on this trip.

So here's to regrouping and staying committed in the face of piss poor results. I'm back to my German base and the drawing board. August is really testing my mettle, but you know me....

I always go back to this song when I need a pick me up, the radio stations at home played it repeatedly for me after I fell at the Athens Olympics. It reminds me to never give up, shows me how far I've come, and that someones got my back.

Sleeping Around

I'm in Europe for the long haul, five weeks of race magic. I've learned to only pack the essentials: Kerry lotion. Snacks. Soap. That. Lathers.

But if I had one wish and there was no weight limitations or restrictions on items a jock could bring, for me it would be so obvious. My mattress!. The same way pole vaulters have to negotiate their poles all around the world, if given the chance I'd go through the same lengths for my Sealy Posturepedic.

I'd check out the model of plane beforehand to make sure my queen could fit. I'd go to the "over sized" items check-in line to gladly be ripped off. So that everywhere I'd go Pretoria (name of the tiny settlement where I slumber) was always with me. Instead every few days it's a different mattress, a different pillow. This wreaks havoc on my spine and REM cycles.

In Stockholm I went from a very fluffy bed to a German bed that feels like a slab at a morg. Not even kidding. My waist hurts, my neck is crooked and my lower back is tied in a knot. And who knows what kind of "give" the bed in London will have.

All this sleeping around on the circuit can't be good for the body.

I'm Too Sexy For These Flip Flops

So normally I would post my post race update here. But bump that. I'm in no mood.

But I found a topic I love to talk about even more than sport: my feet!. Let I explain. Anyone who knows me knows I adore my feet--a lot. Not because they work hard for me, which they do. Or they afford me the luxury of seeing the world. These are just bonuses.

But my self obsession with them dates back a few years when I was at the track and minding my own business. I had finished for the day and was taking off my spikes. There a fellow athlete sitting near me says: "Yo, you have pretty feet.". Then he went back to minding his business.

I looked around. It was just me and him. Oh. Okay. Suddenly a light bulb went off. It had never dawned on me that I had good looking feet. To be certain of this I engaged dude some more. I decided the best route was to feign ignorance. "Oh these ole things?". I tossed my head back, manufactured a giggle and wiggled my toes in his direction.

"Ya for a sprinter your feet are pretty nice", he said nonchalantly. There was that word again: "pretty". It resonated in my brain and thus was all the confirmation I needed. Dammit my feet were handsome. Ugly footed people better watch out!. Let me loose.

I've never walked the same again.

This discovery did get out of hand in the past. I mean who wears flip flops deep into the winter. Gladly, I'm no longer as vainglorious these days where my feet are concerned. But if there is an opportunity to put my toesies on blast or stick'em in your eye in search of a compliment, best believe it: BAM!. All up in your iris!.

So imagine my delight when for the second time at the Stockholm DN Galan meet on Thurdsay there was a chance to immortalize my finest part. Minus its one tiny flaw. Take a peek...

I'll be in Europe for five weeks on this leg. I've been over at this time of the year for a bit longer in the past. But it does get hard towards the end, I have to say.

I guess I am not loving the idea of traveling solo the entire time and spending my 30th unceremoniously in Croatia. Oh well, what ya gonna do?.

This is my dream job so I might as well embrace all the parts. The: "This is bananas--Europe is awesome!" to the "Can I go home--like today?".

On The Road Again

I have to admit I wasn't completely ready to leave the nest and venture back out onto the circuit. A few leisurely days at home would have been nice.

Not so much. Therefore I took my tail to Pearson airport yesterday and rode a plane to Stockholm city. With or without me the season continues. And with me is much better since I can pay my rent this way.

I worked out Tuesday for the first time since Nationals and managed a quick set of snatches and hurdle skill.

My body was ready to get back in to it more than my mind, so I had to check my lethargy at the car park. I reminded myself that there is lots of season left and I'm still in the hunt for the faster times I'm craving.

The DN Galan Diamond League is two rounds of hurdles this Friday August 6. cbcsports.ca is covering the stream live @2-430pm ET. The television broadcast is Saturday August 7 @2-330p ET.

I will be spending the entire month of August in Europe, which means I'll be spending my birthday alone...again. I don't really mind, except it's the big "Three-oh". And who wants to commemorate such a milestone alone?--in Croatia?!--again?!!.. (smells like August 2006).

But it's whatever, such is a life of a stick jumper extraordinoire in her prime and in demand. Gotta soak this up while it lasts. Don't think they request 50yo stick jumpers very much these days.

Its not the best vantage point, but in typical me fashion I had to put my own flare to it. So voila my 9th Canadian crown!

Nine: A Victory Report !!! !!! !!!

Can we say "The best weekend ever"! Oh. My. Gosh. I am so ecstatic! If you haven't heard, I won my ninth National Championship!!

Note: beware of the potential overuse of exclamation points in this post.

If you read my blog you know I've been candid about struggling with my racing form as of late. But after Monaco I decided to stay stone faced in the midst of my less than ideal form.

The week leading up to Toronto was challenging for me on a few fronts. I came to town to prepare without my personal coach. A first for me at a championship. But not so bad, I've been doing this a long time.

Except....

After three races in Europe that were total blow outs and having to prepare for my biggest competition of the summer alone, near my hometown, with the race being the marquee event and did I mention the unusual national media interest?!...yeah.

Gulp.

I was so blessed to have my good friend and MSU coach Randy Gillon who happens to be married to my BFF Nicole decide to drive up to Toronto for the week to help me with my practices and on race day. They just had a baby girl a few weeks ago but when they heard I'd be going at it alone, they weren't having it. I couldn't have put on the finishing touches without them.

To get me through the week I kept focusing on times when I was not the favorite and managed to get it together when it counted most: Paris '03. Budapest '04. Osaka '07. Doha '10 all came to mind.

So could there be a Toronto'10 scenario?. According to BFF, that was up to me to decide. I just had to "get my mind right".

Home Support

Team P was in full attendance, and I think their loud antics must have scared some people in the stands. I heard them my entire warm up on the other side of the stadium. My friend Alison yelled a "LET'S GO P!!!" and I heard someone say: "Gosh that was piercing". LOL.

I wanted to win so much, racing at home is special. The opportunity is a rare treat and I really wanted us to have something to smile about on this night.

All I can do...

The actual race is a blur. I know I was calm before the gun. My work with sports psych Terry Orlick in the past has taught me in pressure situations to clear my mind about thoughts of outcome or my fellow competitors. I do what I am trained to do and let everything else in that moment go.

It was my perfect cocktail: a dash of adrenaline, a pinch of faith and a lot of tunnel vision.

As a result of this focus I had no idea where I was in the race. If I was behind or ahead. I felt Angela pushing me through the early barriers but stayed secure in my own rhythm.

As soon as I felt the tempo get comfortable around hurdle five I knew it was a signal to try to dig deeper, to find a gear...Don't you dare relax.

Hurdles is about a constant acceleration, making each pass faster than the one behind. It is easy to get into a comfort zone, and take the hurdles as they come. It is the best hurdlers that can recognize this and force the issue. Even though your brain is telling you this isn't safe, you need to stop--now!.

You override this God given common sense and charge the barrier with extra nerve and verve, you attack the more. To relax and to surrender to this sense is to never be a contender.

Sweetest Thing I've Known...

The best feeling in any hurdle race is to clear the tenth and final barrier. This is the sweetest moment to me. The risk is over, I've made it through the mine field. Now I am free to lunge my body at the line in desperate photo finish splendor.

And that's what I did. I stayed in the hunt the entire way and didn't back down until I crossed the line. And after that it was out of my hand, all I could do, I had just done. And gratefully it was enough to earn a ninth national crown!.

This One's For You!

It was great to come out on top, my muted celebration was just the calm before the storm. I destroyed a huge chocolate chip and cookie dough ice cream scoop in lieu of the crunk and disorderly celebration I had last year. Best believe I savoured the moment and yet another title. Thanks to EVERYONE who wished me well!.

Lots of love to my mom, family and friends who love me regardless of what I do on the track. You are the ones who buoy my hopes, you're the keepers of my dream.

Hi Everybody,

Yesterday was the Athletics Canada press conference and I have to say I was really happy with the media turnout. It's so nice for track to get some attention this week, even if we'll have to wait two more years for it again. ;-)

I had a long hurdle rhythm session yesterday and I was glad my body felt fine. I was nervous because the routine hasn't been the same this week. But as soon as I spiked up and put on my practice game face it was like I never skipped a beat.

I'm taking today off as a regeneration day, and doing my last media obligation. Then I'll spend the day refining my plan for Saturday. Five hours between the semi and final for me is tricky, and I have to make sure I learn from Berlin last year.

Looking forward to competing at home!! Team P is fired up and ready to go...

I have to admit today was a long day it started at 7am and finished after 4pm. Nevertheless it was great to promote track at home and this weeks championships.

I didn't even attempt to get a serious workout in, that would have been torture. But I managed to get lose, stretch and squeeze in a massage. And this day was already factored in to my week's preparations.

The AC press conference is Wednesday morning @ Nike on Bloor. And after that it's back to business as I know it. As many of you have reminded me...lol. Much appreciated. :)

OTR will air on TSN Wednesday at 6pm. With eTalk on a short summer break our segment won't air before the weekend.

MY (S)HERO!

Every now and then I watch Dr. Phil and he says something a lot: "Every situation needs a hero".

Blank stare.

That would usually be how I'd look at the tele when he said it...and then I'd be giddy to see the domestic dysfunction that ensues.

But today that phrase came to mind and a light bulb came on. In this case it's not that my grandmother stole my winning multi million dollar lottery ticket, then wrote me out of her will. It's my racing. It's not so crisp or where I'd like it to be, so I'm in need of a hero.

Enter Captain save a ~~hoe~~...hurdler...?

No. Because I came to the realization that the only possible hero in this situation is me.

Durr!.

Of course I won't be doing it alone but it starts there. So being the She-ro that I am, I'm gonna save my own damn self.

Yes Regis, final answer.

Dangit, I'm gonna put on my oxygen mask first and worry about the little kid flying solo beside me later...

Baaad analogy, yes I know.

But you get my point. And for me that's as simple as staying the course and giving it 100, in the midst of not seeing the results I sweat hard for.

I was 4th in Monaco and executed terribly. A string of three races with not one being anything I can take to the bank.

Literally....(almost).

Frustrating, yes. But I've had strings of three races before that have been exactly what I expected. Utter delight and bankability when this happens.

In six years on the circuit, I've learned the balancing act that keeps all jocks sane: Never get too high. Never get too low.

Stay somewhere in the middle. That's where you can thrive, be humble, believe and regroup if you have too.

Simple.

So I'm taking it back to the house, brushing my shoulders off and doing the work. Because its gonna show up. It has too.

I was fortunate after the race in the cool down area to explain my side of race day to a foreign and very symphathetic camera crew...

It was immediately apparent to me one of the girls had let one rip...eww...right beside me...lane 4...it sorta shook me...ya know?

Monaco 2010

What it do! I'm updating from Monaco, in the South of France. I gotta say I love it here and could get used to the lifestyle. It's beautiful, they speak french and everything is paid for. And to make matters even better my Fucci purse blends so well into the surroundings. I know, you can't even tell!.

I wasn't online at all on Monday and I know there was some concern from my internet society friends. "Gasp!, P is not online?!". I know. Ludicrous. I'm that chick that can find a signal on the moon or at least a suspect, but worth the risk "internet "cafe" in Borneo.

Anyhoo, as soon as I walked into the hotel I asked about the internet setup. First things first. Catherine told me it was $40 a day. I started to laugh (in french): honh honh honh. No really how much is it, Cath?. Sorry Madame it is the best rate in Monaco because it is for 24 hours.

Zut alors.

Well we all know me: frugalistic. So I stayed without. Just sat on the bed watching the tele and guessing how many emails were left unattended in my inbox or daydreaming of who may have poked me on facebook.

There had to be a way to get on the interweb....for free. There just had to be. I started to think: What would Macgyver do?. So I started to play with some exposed wires at the back of the TV. Nope. Still no free internet. It just jacked up the channels. Macgyver sucked anyways.

Another hour went by. It was nearly midnight and I had failed to slay the jetlag jaberwoccky, so aimless and bored I picked up the random pamphlets at the side of the bed. All in french, but because I have been brushing up on my french by podcast lately, I decided to read them.

The hotel talked about their green initiative. Bravo. Then mentioned how to escape during a fire. C'est tres necessaire. The last booklet seemed basic too, except one word jumped off the page at me instantly. It was the french word for internet!. *Note: if I never learn another french word after today, I don't care. Because guess what the french word for internet is?... Yup. "INTERNET"!.

*Note: I wanna give a shout out to Madame Alfano. Whoop Whoop, grade 5 french standup!. This day was our destiny.

My interpretation of the pamphlet was if I signed up for this program my $internet$ charge of $40/day would be waived for my entire stay. I didn't even read what I was signing up for. Sacrifice of my first born, the removal of my front teeth, donation de kidnies. I didnt care. I got dressed headed to the lobby and in my best Amistad said: "Give us us free".

So there you have it. I'm here and we're reunited and neither of us have to pay for it!. I guess I could have used the free meet internet, but who wants to sit in a foyer all day. Ick.

I’ll update later, Im going to head to lunch and then to the track to get my legs back in the groove.
